We performed a\u00a0survey in Austria and Germany to assess the use of UVCs and PICCs in preterm infants with a\u00a0birth weight <\u202f1250\u202fg and associated rates of catheter-related adverse events.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title><jats:p>Electronic survey of participating centers of the NeoVitaA trial. Main outcome parameter was the reported rates of UVC- and PICC-associated complications (infection, thrombosis, emboli, organ injury, arrhythmia, dislocation, miscellaneous).<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>In total, 20\u00a0neonatal intensive care units (NICU) providing maximal intensive care in Austria and Germany (level\u00a0I) were contacted, with a\u00a0senior neonatologist response rate of 12\/20 (60%). The reported rates for UVC with a\u00a0dwell time of 1\u201310\u00a0days were bacterial infection: 4.2\u202f\u00b1\u20093.4% (range 0\u201310%); thrombosis: 7.3\u202f\u00b1\u20097.1% (0\u201320%); emboli: 0.9\u202f\u00b1\u20092.0% (0\u20135%); organ injury: 1.1\u202f\u00b1\u20091.9% (0\u20135%); cardiac arrhythmia: 2.2\u202f\u00b1\u20092.5% (0\u20135%); and dislocation: 5.4\u202f\u00b1\u20098.7% (0\u201330%); and for PICCs with a\u00a0dwell time of 1\u201314\u00a0days bacterial infection: 15.0\u202f\u00b1\u20093.4% (range 2.5\u201330%); thrombosis; 4.3\u202f\u00b1\u20093.5% (0\u201310%); emboli: 0.8\u202f\u00b1\u20091.6% (0\u20135%); organ injury: 1.5\u202f\u00b1\u20092.3% (0\u20135%); cardiac arrhythmia: 1.5\u202f\u00b1\u20092.3% (0\u20135%), and dislocation: 8.5\u202f\u00b1\u20094.6% (0\u201330%).<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion<\/jats:title><jats:p>The catheter-related complication rates reported in this survey differed between UVCs and PICCs and were higher than those reported in the literature.
