This study investigates the relationship between working alliance and treatment outcome, the change of working alliance throughout therapy and patient characteristics as predictors of working alliance.<\/jats:p>\n              <\/jats:sec><jats:sec>\n                <jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title>\n                <jats:p>Data from a randomized controlled trial including 44 participants was used. Patient characteristics were assessed at baseline and working alliance was assessed after two, four, six, eight and ten sessions. A linear mixed model, multiple linear regression and best subset regression were conducted.<\/jats:p>\n              <\/jats:sec><jats:sec>\n                <jats:title>Results<\/jats:title>\n                <jats:p>Working alliance changed significantly during therapy (\u03b2\u2009=\u20091.46, <jats:italic>SE<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u20090.27, <jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>(162)\u2009=\u20095.38, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2009&lt;\u2009.001). Early working alliance predicted prolonged grief symptoms, when controlled for baseline scores of grief (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a0.27, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u2009.023). Moreover, self-efficacy (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009.47, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2009&lt;\u2009.001) and need for social support (\u03b2\u2009=\u2009\u2212\u00a0.38, <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u2009.010) predicted early working alliance.<\/jats:p>\n              <\/jats:sec><jats:sec>\n                <jats:title>Conclusions<\/jats:title>\n                <jats:p>This study shows the relevance of establishing early working alliance in the therapeutic process. Attention should be paid to the initial self-efficacy and need for social support of patients, as it influences the experience of working alliance.
