Behavioral change and action competence have also become important goals in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), complementing and interacting with other educational goals such as the development of sustainability-relevant knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. We argue that these interconnected learning goals of ESD can be advanced by integrating interdisciplinary behavioral science concepts, methods, and insights into the design of curricula, learning environments, and processes for participatory whole-school approaches. Specifically, we highlight the role of metacognitive competency in self-directed individual and collective behavior change and we present our educational design concept for teaching human behavior as an interdisciplinary theme in ESD.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/su15097413","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,5,1]],"date-time":"2023-05-01T16:14:08Z","timestamp":1682957648000},"page":"7413","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Behavioral Science and Education for Sustainable Development: Towards Metacognitive Competency"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"15","author":[{"ORCID":"http:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8273-6481","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Susan","family":"Hanisch","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Faculty of Education, University of Leipzig, 04109 Leipzig, Germany"},{"name":"Research Group for Biology Education, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, 07743 Jena, Germany"},{"name":"Department of Comparative Cultural Psychology, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, 04103 Leipzig, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"http:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-3836-1501","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Dustin","family":"Eirdosh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Research Group for Biology Education, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, 07743 Jena, Germany"},{"name":"Department of Comparative Cultural Psychology, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, 04103 Leipzig, Germany"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,4,29]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Biglan, A.
